Hello Readers,
Lately, it seems like there are movements everywhere for
body confidence and positive body image. Last week, Lane Byrant, a plus size
women’s clothing company, released its new campaign, “#I’mNoAngel.”
The campaign name/hashtag is a direct dig at Victoria’s
Secret, which calls its top supermodels “Angels.” Perhaps one of the biggest
goals for many in the modeling world is to become a Victoria’s Secret Angel, as
it is often considered reaching the highest point possible of a modeling
career. But the idea that becoming an “Angel” is the greatest achievement in
modeling may soon be changed… or seems to be already changing.
While some people have criticized the #I’mNoAngel campaign
for “skinny shaming” those who are naturally thin and making it seem like being
thin is a bad thing, the brand says: "The Lane Bryant #IMNOANGEL initiative celebrates women of
all shapes and sizes by redefining society's traditional notion of sexy with a
powerful core message: ALL women are sexy."
The
Lane Bryant website also states that “the women who wear Cacique [Intimate line] know that sexy
comes in many shapes and sizes. They’re no angels—and they own it. Join the
women who are redefining sexy by posting your personal statement of confidence
using the hashtag #ImNoAngel. There are already over 16,000 posts with
#ImNoAngel, and the campaign just started a few days ago!
At
this point, Victoria’s Secret has not responded to the #ImNoAngel campaign, but
I’m interested to see if and what they respond.

next time,

Hi Carly! I was really interested in this new campaign and I did a google search to find out more. It seems that because of the Lane Byrant campaign and the fact that society is changing to accept people of all sizes, Victoria Secret may be in trouble. I am interested to see how this campaign in particular affects the sales and marketing of the Victoria Secret Company in a few months.
ReplyDeleteHello Carly. Coming from a guy's perspective, I never put too much thought into body image (if you're fit, and you don't have any aches/pains/health problems, then you're good to go. If a 6-pack makes you feel internally secure, go for it). But I sometimes worry that by the time I'm 60 or 70 years old, I will be the old conservative close-minded grandpa. It feels like society will change extremely fast (culturally, art, beauty-wise). I feel more for the people who talk about the 80's now.
ReplyDeleteI too looked at this campaign. It really does show the power of social media-how an idea caught on so fast! I love what the message is behind #ImNoAngel. Do you think there are any other businesses or companies besides Victoria Secret who might be affected by this?

Hi Hannah,
DeleteSorry for my delay in responding to you! Maybe other companies that only use extremely thin models will be affected by the campaign, but I think mainly Victoria's Secret is being attacked since they are the only ones who call their top models the "angels."
Hi this is Cayley from Lutheran High School doing a blog check in very interesting work! Love to see that you want to make a difference. Do you think we can change social media for good?
ReplyDeleteHi Cayley,
DeleteThanks for your comment! I wish social media could only be used positively with regards to body image, but unfortunately it seems sort of unrealistic to completely change social media for good. With more positive movements though, perhaps the good/positive posts can outweigh all the bad/harmful ones!
I have had so much interest in your senior project and think that it has such a great message. I looked into this campaign a little more and think that it's extremely empowering for women. The campaign caught on so fast. Do you think that goes to show how many women feel insecure and deal with these issues? The amount of attention something like this is getting can only mean that it has significant importance in the lives of americans.
ReplyDeleteI'm interested to continue to see where your project goes from here!
Hi Ellie,
DeleteThank you! I do believe that the popularity of this advertisement/campaign is a good indication that many people struggle with body confidence, and hopefully the advertisement will help with that problem...
